A Word From a Male Feminist (Yes, They Exist!)

Posted on

Anyone can be a feminist, it’s not confined to just women.  I know many male feminists.  It doesn’t emasculate them, or insinuate that that are ‘under the thumb’, all it means is that they are aware that things aren’t necessarily as good for women as they could be.

Benjamin Jones wrote a blog about his stance on feminism a while ago, as well as having posted on other things such as the No More Page 3 campaign (something that I, as a woman, not just a feminist, feel very strongly about).

I recommend everyone toddles on over to his blog to have a read.

Welcome to Worcester Feminists!

Being a feminist is not all about not shaving your armpits and hating men (although, not forgetting, there are those that do…). As a feminist, it is my belief that women have the same opportunities as men, feminists fight for equality, it is not a case of ‘women are better than men’ (again, there are some that believe this, and I prefer to distance myself from those). There are a number of issues faced by women becoming major stories in the media – we saw last week, the landmark ruling that former employees of Birmingham City Council have the right to equal pay, setting the bar for equal pay throughout the council, there is a campaign for the Sun to do away with Page 3 as is represents women as being only fit to ogle, with not much more to them, and recently there was a feminist lobby at the Houses of Parliament to raise awareness of inequalities faced by women from all walks of life.

The aim of this page is to hopefully educate people into realising that ‘feminism’ is not a dirty word, and to gather enough interest to set up a society at my university (Worcester).

All are welcome, men can be feminists too, and are most definitely encouraged to join. The aim of the society would be to keep up to date with what other feminist groups are up to across the country, to take part in any action, to raise awareness of the problems many women face, and to support women facing inequality within the university, and to make a change for the better.

If you are a current student at Worcester, and are interested in joining the society, drop me a line at kwiddop@hotmail.co.uk, links with other feminist groups are positively encouraged! Get in touch!
